Indeed, Munro plays it very straight (ugh. Which was kind of hilarious even though it wasn't played for laughs. She's straight but pops out about having a girlfriend to the relief of her family who have all thought she was secretly gay all this time and just didn't trust them to come out. But I wouldn't encourage imitating it if so because I very nearly didn't bite. And when I liked the characters, found them engaging, believable, and fun? Well, that was just icing.Īnd maybe that's the strategy here? Like, set expectations so low that everything comes across as an unexpected delight? Possible, I suppose. I don't tend to notice unless it's really bad but what I'm saying is that this one isn't bad. So when I didn't find grammatical errors or editing mistakes, I was pleasantly surprised (note, it doesn't do to tell me there are some. Unexpected mostly because the cover screams "I'm an amateur with no clue how to produce a book". This was an unexpectedly delightful read.
